PhD student position in NCN OPUS project

We are looking for a doctoral researcher to join Human Interactivity and Language Lab (Faculty of Psychology, University of Warsaw) within NCN OPUS project “Movement Coordination: Between Interpersonal Connection and Individual Autonomy” 2024/53/B/HS1/01428 (PI: Julian Zubek). The project is focused on the feeling of togetherness emerging between individuals interacting with each other through movement. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, and movement studies. An ideal candidate is someone who is interested in embodied theories of social understanding and has experience in quantitative data analysis techniques (especially time series analysis and coordination measures).

Starting date: 1/10/2025
Employment type: PhD stipend within the Multidisciplinary Doctoral School (disciplines: Psychology and Mathematics) for 3 years
Salary: 4242.00 PLN gross before the mid-term evaluation, 5340.90 PLN gross after the mid-term evaluation

Responsibilities:

  • Designing experimental procedures, preparation of research methods to be used in the project.
  • Conducting experiments involving human subjects.
  • Preparation of dynamical measures of movement coordination.
  • Quantitative data analysis.
  • Preparation of literature review.
  • Preparation of scientific publications and conference presentations showcasing research results (in English).
  • Organization of working meetings and seminars.

Formal requirements:

  • Fulfillment of the conditions set out in the attachment to the NCN resolution no. 23/2024 from the 4th March 2024 regarding the distribution of the funds for the realisation of financial tasks financed by the National Centre of Science within the research projects.

Essential qualifications:

  • MA in Cognitive Science or an area related to it (Psychology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Linguistics, Neurobiology, Informatics, Mathematics, etc.).
  • Experience in conducting experiments with human subjects.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis methods.
  • Practical knowledge of Python, R, or a similar programming language.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken, at the level allowing for work with written research material and on a joint scientific publication.

Desirable:

  • Experience in presenting one’s research at conferences, symposiums, or seminars.
  • Experience in working on scientific publications.
  • Knowledge of the basics of mathematical analysis and linear algebra.
  • Familiarity with the methods of digital signal processing and time series analysis.
  • Familiarity with motion analysis techniques and measures of coordination.
  • Specialized knowledge in the project’s thematic area: movement improvisation and its socio-cultural context, psychological aspects of movement, somatic education techniques, dance and movement therapy. Practical experience in these fields will be an additional asset.
