Cognitive Systems Modelling X

Language evolution
21-24 October 2021
Kalatówki, near Zakopane, Poland

The peripatetic conference (from gr. peripatētikós – “given to walking around”), organized yearly by the University of Warsaw, brings together researchers on cognitive systems, from bacteria to societies, to discuss their recent work as well as more general problems (research, methodological, ethical) in the study and modelling of cognition.

We are happy to announce that our keynote speakers this year are Łukasz Dębowski (Polish Academy of Sciences), Ramon Ferrer-i-Cancho (U. Politecnica de Catalunya), Xavier Hinaut (Inria, Bordeaux), Garret Roberts (University of Pennsylvania), Katharina Rohlfing (University of Paderborn) and Marieke Schouwstra (University of Amsterdam).

You can find this year's program here and for a brief overview of the talks, the book of abstracts may be downloaded here.

In the previous editions, we hosted psychologists, cognitive scientists, computer scientists, linguists, physicists, biologists, mathematicians, anthropologists, sociologists, and others. You are invited as long as you remain open to other disciplines and can walk and talk at the same time.

This year's edition (the 10th!) will be devoted to an interdisciplinary consideration of the problem of emergence of communication, in individual development and in evolution. The many shades of the complex communication systems we encounter in the wild brought about a multitude of their theoretical and computational models on multiple time scales.

We strive to facilitate a dialogue between the agent-based simulations approach to language emergence and development and more global analyses of language based in the information theory. One of the main open problems common to all our disciplines is the question of how local processes may lead to the emergence of systems of particular info-theoretical qualities.

Like before, besides the main theme, we are always interested in hearing from you about your new research in the area of cognition modelling. If you are a student or a very early-stage researcher and would like to get involved, you can also present a 10 min book review.

>To participate in the conference, fill in the application form with the title of your presentation and an abstract up to 300 words before 1 October 2021 23:59 CET.

Applications are closed now.

The conference will take place in the mountain Hotel Kalatówki, near Zakopane. We talk science in the morning, walk during the day, and finish off with another round of short presentations.

To meet the sanitary requirements and keep everyone safe, we can accept no more than 30 participants, so the earlier you apply, the better your chances to get in.

The full cost of the conference, including accommodation and two meals per day, is 700 zł. However, we offer full and partial grants for students and researchers awarded on a per-need basis. You can apply for funding in the application form.

To participate in the conference in person, every presenter will be required to provide the EU COVID Certificate, its national equivalent or a negative COVID-19 test result no older than 48 hours.
